गु-शब्दस्त्वन्धकारः रु-शब्दस्तु तन्निवारकः ।
अन्धकार निरोधत्वात् गुरुरित्यभिधीयते ॥
The word ‘Gu’ stands for darkness and the word ‘Ru’ stands for the removal of darkness and the one who dispels the darkness of ignorance and awakeness the light of inner wisdom is called a ‘Guru’ (Teacher).
Guru Purnima is celebrated on the Poornima (Full Moon) of the Ashadha month as per hindu calendar. On this day, we bow to the force of wisdom and guidance by celebrating the presence of Guru in our life – who brings us out from the darkness by enlightening us with knowledge and wisdom. The day of Poornima is to be considered as the most auspicious as Chandra is complete in its 16 kalas – from Holi to Rakshabandhan, the significant festivals are to be celebrated on the full moon day as on this day sky is open to shower the maximum – it is the day of completion, abundance and divine blessings. Guru Purnima holds importance for various reasons. It is the day for the celebration of consciousness and wisdom that has been delivered to human history by the greatest of all – Sage Vyasa – compiler of the Vedas and author of the Mahabharata was born on this. The one who was trikaldarshi – who blessed the world. In yogic tradition on this day Lord Shiva, the Adi Guru, gave his first teaching of Yoga to the Sapta Rishis. On this day Jupiter moves closer to the Sun – Illumination of wisdom and enlightenment occurs. This is the day when we can reciprocate the most with the universe as the sky opens for showering the wisdom on us – it is the best day to receive the grace of guru. From taking the first steps to mastering the crux – everything begins from learning and true learning comes from bowing down with humility and grace, a true Guru’s touch only can transform dust into gold. Jupiter is the one if well placed changes the whole course of any chart – it is the blessing of guru which can take you out even from the deadlock situations. No wonder the journey of wisdom begins from the 9th house (Sagittarius) – Jupiter (Brihaspati) is called the Guru – teacher & signifies higher wisdom, principles and expansion. On this day we should worship Lord Jupiter and seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu – preserver of the universe. Guru can lead you beyond darkness into wisdom as only after crossing the house of transformation and death, one arrives at the 9th house – the house of Dharma, Guru, principles and higher learning.
Jupiter in the 8th house has the power to bring out anyone from the gravest of the grave situation that is why it eventually goes on to rule the 9th house – the sign of Sagittarius – act of war where Guru guides you how to use the archery bow to aim at your goal, where the stairs are towards serving the masses and guiding them without any malicious intent. The sign of Sagittarius where you have to stop thinking without head (has to drop the dilemmas and ego) – reason being Ketu exalted here as being headless and accepting the words of your Guru as it is. The over-expansion (Guru) and emotionally apathetic (Ketu), the native takes on large projects beneficially for the human society and goes on to do his karmas at his best in the 10th house where mostly all classical texts have written quite good about Jupiter being there – head of institution and you need 10th house Jupiter in order to be a true guru – the light of life in daily lives of the people.

We have a Guru-Shishya relationship with the Universe but to manifest that blessing one has to be open enough to receive, this the best day for students to receive blessings of Guru. One should be humble enough as Guru has the potential to change your life like no other but remember Guru works in silence – preparation is done in silence – Guru prepares you for the battle (Capricorn comes after Sagittarius) to perform your Karma – learning your dharma is important – his blessings will always be louder but be humble enough to receive at the par of potential he has to give. This is the day to pay tribute to the Gurus who transformed your life with their wisdom and guidance and enlightened the path.
ॐ गुरुवे नमः – Bow down to Mahadev and Lord Vishnu – May he blesses us all with wisdom and consciousness to rise above the spells of Darkness.
