Understanding the Panchak Period in Vedic Astrology

PANCHANG SE PANCHAK

In the rich tradition of Jyotish Shastra (Vedic astrology), a group of five consecutive nakshatras is known as Panchak. These are Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati. The Moon takes about 27 days to travel through all 27 nakshatras, so this Panchak cycle repeats every month, carrying with it unique astrological influences.

The Nature of Panchak Nakshatras

Each nakshatra in this group has a specific Sangya (classification) and corresponding effects:

  • Dhanishta and ShatabhishaChara Sangya (movable): Ideal for travel, entertainment, and purchasing garments or ornaments.
  • Purva BhadrapadaUgra Sangya (fierce): Avoid auspicious or delicate tasks.
  • Uttara BhadrapadaDhruva Sangya (fixed): Excellent for laying foundations and initiating long-term plans.
  • RevatiMridu Sangya (gentle): Perfect for music, drama, arts, and spiritual practices.

Panchak and the Weekday Connection

The energy of Panchak is influenced by the weekday it begins:

  • Sunday (Rog Panchak) – Avoid new health regimes or risky ventures.
  • Monday (Raj Panchak) – Good for property, legal work, and official dealings.
  • Tuesday (Agni Panchak) – Avoid construction; suitable for resolving disputes.
  • Friday (Chor Panchak) – Not favourable for financial transactions or travel.
  • Saturday (Mrityu Panchak) – Avoid major beginnings; focus on closure and caution.
  • Wednesday & Thursday – Generally safe for most activities, with a few traditional exceptions.

Traditional Wisdom: Dos and Don’ts During Panchak

Do:

  • Choose an auspicious muhurta within Panchak for urgent tasks.
  • Focus on spiritual work, music, studies, and charity, especially in Revati Nakshatra.
  • Utilise Raj Panchak (Monday start) for land, legal, and government matters.

Don’t:

  • Construct or buy a bed or cot.
  • Travel towards the south direction.
  • Perform cremations unless absolutely necessary.
  • Place a roof during Revati Nakshatra.
  • Initiate large financial investments during Chor Panchak (Friday start).

These are summed up beautifully in Jyotish Siddhanta:

पञ्चके चतुराचार्यं दाहादिकर्मवर्जनम्।
दक्षिण्यं गमनं त्याज्यं शय्याभाण्डं कल्पयेत्॥

During Panchak, avoid cremations, southward travel, and making beds or cots.

Similarly, Muhurta Chintamani adds:

चित्त्वा शय्यां पञ्चके,
दाह्यं मृतं तथा।
गच्छेत् दक्षिणं देशं,
नवं शुद्धयेद् गृहम्॥

Do not build or repair a bed, cremate the dead, travel southward, or start major home repairs during Panchak.

Hidden Opportunities in Panchak

Not all Panchak days are restrictive. Some combinations produce auspicious results — for example, Uttara Bhadrapada on a Sunday creates Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga, highly beneficial for important tasks. Similarly, Revati, Shatabhisha, or Purva Bhadrapada on certain weekdays form yogas like Chara, Sthira, or Pravardha, which are considered auspicious.

Conclusion

Panchak is a period wrapped in tradition and caution, yet it is not a time to fear. By observing the Dos and Don’ts, choosing the right muhurta, and applying remedies when needed, one can harmonise with its energy. Vedic astrology teaches balance — knowing not just whether to act, but when and how to act is the true wisdom.

Learnt new thing about panchak… From one the utube sources I heard that, people who are born in these panchak nakshatras need special puja after their birth as these are inauspicious and create problems for the family as well as in the life of the native.. Also those who left the earth on these nakshatras need special santi puja… is that true?

  2. Thankyou sir for sharing your knowledge on Panchak Nakshatras. If someone is born in Panchak then do they carry heavy karmic bonds? Do they need to do some remedies

  3. Thank you so much for this article it’s really helpful to understand the energy of panchak nakshtra🙏🙏

  4. Excellent blog on Panchak which is not known to many. Please tell Deepanshu ji to make a detailed video on this for benefit of masses. Reason from my perspective is that someone asked me that we should not buy anything in Panchak, however real facts are unknown to people and name panchak generates fear in people and advantage of that is taken by those who called themselves panchang expert.
